A fundamental concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine is that of acupuncture meridians and channels in both humans and our animal friends. Meridians are seen as pathways by which energy moves throughout the body. Along each primary meridian are gateways where energy can be assessed. These gateways are the acupuncture points. Each meridian travels through certain parts of the body allowing energy to circulate and nourish these areas as well as the organ systems associated with them. This relationship of meridians to body areas gives us ways of accessing the energy of those areas through the pointed located along the meridian course. For example the Large Intestine Meridian flows from the front paw, up the front leg, over the shoulder area, across the face, ending by the nose. We can use the points along the Large Intestine Meridian to help relieve painful conditions in the area through which the meridian flows.
In addition to treating pain and weakness symptoms in animals, we can also use the channels to address imbalances in the corresponding internal organ systems. So if the animal has breathing problems, the Lung Meridian is used to help balance or strengthen the lung energy.
Heidi pictured here suffers from stiffness and some mobility issues, however she is still active and loves to hold on to her own lead whilst on her daily walk with Helen her owner - she is a star! OHM unison was used around the ears and around her field and then gently placed down her spine and a couple of points on her Urinary Bladder Meridian were used which relaxes the muscles for the neck, back and leg and/or stiffness; referred to as the ‘aspirin point’ because it relieves pain. As you can see from the photos, Heidi enjoyed the experience and it was helpful for me to pop in with my tools. Helen her owner reported great success with Heidi enjoying her next walk with more vitality.
